To be President of the Ana G. Méndez University System (AGMUS) is a great responsibility which I assumed in 1974. Since then, I have had the firm purpose of transforming and making this educational institution an entity of constant innovation.
Our mission fills me with pride: to achieve a university education of excellence, accessible to everyone in the country, especially to students from low-income families. That is why we reaffirm ourselves in “education as a vehicle for improvement”, as our founder, Ana G. Méndez, used to say. Even today, her legacy is our goal. My mother used to say that “our Institution is inspired by love; love for the country, the youth, education, the family and, above all, of God”.
My greatest satisfaction is to know that AGMUS has contributed to Puerto Rican society through the education that thousands of students have received in our institutions; the University of the East, the Metropolitan University, the University of Turabo, the Ana G. Méndez University–Virtual Campus and the university centers in Florida and Maryland.
With great satisfaction I have devoted all my efforts to making AGMUS a system which is ahead of the times. The Institute for Public Policy, the Office of Regional Alliances, studies regarding bilingual education, the internationalization of our Institution, the Arecibo Observatory and the Security and Protection Institute (ISEP) [Spanish acronym], are some of the initiatives that reflect our effectiveness and performance as an avant-garde educational institution.
